Become an Election Judge

Election judges are the trained, paid workers who administer election procedures at each polling place and help ensure the process is fair and follows Illinois election law.

What election judges do

Judges arrive before the polls open, set up the polling place, check in voters, issue ballots, resolve routine questions, and complete the closing count. Each precinct is staffed by judges from both major parties.

Frequently asked questions

Do I work the entire day?

Yes. Judges generally arrive around 5:00 a.m. and remain until the polling place is closed and final paperwork is complete, often around 8:00 p.m. or later.

Must I work in my own precinct?

No. Election authorities assign judges where they are needed, although some judges prefer to work near home.

Is training required?

Yes. The Rockford Board of Election Commissioners or Winnebago County Clerk provides required training. Completing training may increase the amount you are paid.

Are meals provided?

No. Bring the food and beverages you need for the day. Judges can take short breaks when polling-place coverage allows.

How do I vote if I am assigned elsewhere?

Judges assigned outside their home precinct should use early voting or vote by mail before Election Day.
